I’m trying to make portraits that are first interesting to me. If someone else sees something in them that is a bonus. An artist, if honest, is trying to flatter himself. Everything else is a by-product.

I met Henry Cooper and later Traci Lords at the same venue. What can I say, I was a little intimidated by the sheer presence of the man. I can’t recall what I exactly said at the time, though I do remember thanking him after I’d taken my pictures. Well you would wouldn’t you?

I usually tell my portrait subjects that the final image is not going to be a photograph. I can’t be sure but I think they like the idea that it’s not just another photo call. It’s a real eye opener to see first-hand, how wearing it must be. So I’m very fortunate and feel grateful when a small portion of their time is granted to me. I’ve been very lucky really.
