This is all about thinking through a problem; how to collect, move and assemble half a million kilos of steel. Not many floors can support such a weight. Nor can many indoor cranes lift it.
The object is a 4 metre cube. Except this means it was slightly over the target weight. For this reason a corner (top right) needed to be trimmed to reduce the final weight to exactly 500,000 kilograms.
Assembling in sections would spoil the smooth look of the sides and a hollow cube wouldn’t sound right. That’s the challenge.
Strangely finding a location wasn’t hard. The Great Hall of the old Science Museum, now abandoned, was perfect. It has a solid floor and would support a great weight. Already derelict, there would be no danger of further damage.
I also thought of getting everyone involved to sign NDAs. That’s the really easy part.
