‘Vital Details #2’ – 2010

“There is an expectation that artists should only wear one hat, otherwise they will be perceived as uncommitted.”

There is an expectation and I don’t know where it comes from that artists should only wear one hat, otherwise they will be perceived as uncommitted. Multi-disciplined artists are viewed with suspicion.

A strong link exists between obsession and creativity. Although many good works have been a product of obsession this is not the only way to achieve results.
While sticking to what you know is sometimes a sensible option it will usually result in producing variations of the same work.
Sometimes if something is selling well this is a good strategy. However this narrow view worries me because it ultimately hampers creativity and restricts diversity.

‘Vital Details #2’ is based on another computer painting ‘The Vital Stretch #5’ that was chosen for the first Birmingham Open exhibition in 2007 at the BM&AG.
So sticking to what I know, I’ve reworked some of the elements and dispensed with the rest, restricting diversity.
I now prefer this version.
